As part of our fantastic team of trackwork riders at Wexford Stables, Jaffer Mohammed joined the crew in 2019. As strapper of 2021 Group One Derby winner Asterix, his excellent horse handling skills came into play and under the pressure of the Derby environment, he was able to strap the horse calmly and with great expertise.
Never one to miss a photo opportunity, you will see plenty of photos of Jaffer and his favorite horses across social media, showcasing his love and dedication for the horses in our care.
We spoke to Jaffer to get the rundown on his start in racing and his proudest moment so far...
How did you first get involved in the racing industry?
I began working in racing in 2016. With no prior experience with horses, I got involved through a friend of my brother's who was a jockey. I started working at a racing stable in my home town of Hyderabad. I worked there for three years. At first I only did ground staff duties and after a year of work, I learnt how to ride.
In 2019 I moved to the South Island, where I worked for a couple of months. I then rode for Phil Stevens in Matamata for 8 months, before joining Wexford Stables. I have been at Wexford for around two years now.
What is your current role at Wexford?
Trackwork rider.
What do you enjoy most about the role?
I enjoy riding and I love working with the horses. Gallops and jump-outs are always good as well.
And least?
Mucking out!
What has been your proudest racing moment with Wexford?
Definitely leading in Asterix in the Group One New Zealand Derby.
Do you have a soft spot for one horse in particular?
My absolute favorite horse is Spirit Heart, she is very close to my heart and I always ride her in the mornings. I have a soft spot for Novashow as well.
One horse in the barn people should keep an eye on over the next few months?
I think the Satono Aladdin x Bateleur colt is a very nice horse.
What is your favorite thing about working at Wexford Stables?
I love working for Andrew and Lance, they are nice people and good trainers. I also love working with the horses.
