Strapper of Group One Queensland Derby hope, Dark Destroyer Megan has been an integral part of getting 'Boy' performing to his best this preparation. After an exceptionally tough win in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate last weekend, we spoke to Megan to find out more about her experience in racing and why she loves being a part of team Wexford!
How did you first get involved in the racing industry?
When I was on maternity leave I started going to the stables to visit a friend who was doing her apprenticeship with Jimmy Litt in Hawera. I eventually started working there on the ground and I never returned to my old job. I learnt to ride trackwork, jumpouts and even had a few rides as an amateur.
What is your current role at Wexford?
Travelling Foreman.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
This is my first trip away to Australia with a horse, and the whole trip has been amazing so far. It’s been great to meet so many new people and learn new things. Getting to spend one on one time with Dark Destroyer has been awesome, he’s my best buddy.
And least?
Would be spending such a long time away from my girls whilst in Australia.
What has been your proudest racing moment with Wexford?
Without a doubt Dark Destroyer winning the Rough Habit Plate at Eagle Farm. He put on a huge performance that day and I can’t wait to see him in action in the Gr.1 Queensland Derby in 10 days time! Asterix winning the Gr.1 Vodafone New Zealand Derby this year was pretty special also, as the whole team at Wexford played a part in getting him there.
Do you have a soft spot for one horse in particular?
Divine Duke (recently retired). He was one of the first horses I started riding at Wexford after a lengthy break from riding trackwork. He always looked after me and helped me to regain my confidence. We also shared a love of going fast over jumps!
What is one horse in the barn people should keep an eye on over the next few months?
Frankel/Breeze filly, she’s a beautiful big girl with a great attitude.
What is your favourite thing about Wexford Stables?
Scotty and Lance are great bosses and the staff all get along, so it's always fun to be at work and achievements are always celebrated.
Megan is a valued team member with a fantastic work ethic, passion for racing and love of horses. We are looking forward to celebrating a successful campaign with Megan when she returns!
