Abels enjoying successful innings with Wexford Stables.
23 Jan 2014It’s an exciting time for owners Alan and Christine Abel and there could be more in store at Rotorua tomorrow.
The Abels are on a winning streak with Wexford Stables, having won two races within the space of three days earlier this month. Fiftyshadesofgrey registered her third win from 13 starts when coming with a well-timed burst at Rotorua on January 6, then three days later their promising three-year-old filly Justintime won on debut at Paeroa.
Their attention swings back to Fiftyshadesofgrey tomorrow and, judging by the way she has thrived since her last win, further celebration could be in store for them.
Fiftyshadesogrey will contest the $8000 Atkinson and Donaldson Plumbing 1400, a rating 75 event, and will again be ridden by the in-form Mark Du Plessis, who is fresh from a Group One double at Trentham last Saturday.
She is unbeaten in two starts at Rotorua, having cleared maiden ranks on the track 12 months ago, and understandably the Abels are getting a lot of pleasure from the Savabeel mare, whom they bred from Prime Time, a winner and placegetter in Australia.
Fiftyshadesofgrey has won two of her last three starts and is developing into a handy galloper who should work further through the grades.
Justintime is also showing the potential which could see her make her mark in good company. She has benefited from her debut and is being targeted at the Te Rapa Premier meeting on February 8 with a special conditions maiden 1600 metres in mind.
Alan Abel has not only been a prominent owner for many years, he has also contributed to business and the community in Tauranga and the wider Bay Of Plenty for more than 40 years.
As a result of his services to business and the community he was awarded an ONZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2010.
